BEAM Wiki Project from Hamburg

Picture: Twin-Engine Solar Roller

The finding of the week is the BEAM-Wiki, a project from Hamburg led by Marcus Nowotny. His goal is to build a specialized and well documented resource for BEAM-Bots with instructions, tutorials and inspiration. One initial reason for doing so is, that there are already good resources on the internet like solarbotics. But most of this resources are obviously out-of-date when it some to web-standards. He also reports that this sites mostly are not really maintained and that answers don't come at hand.

The BEAM-Wiki can be the solution to this. We will definitely support the idea and joined the community. Please check out the blog for the latest ramblings and inspiration for some bots.

Nice Robotic-Blog with Texts and Tutorials

I found a nice little Robotic Blog, filed under aurorian.blogspot.com. It features nice text on robotics background, just like this compact overview on swarm intelligence algorithms and use cases. There are also some very nice tutorials on how to to build your own little robotic experiments or components, using beam-style. For example this one shows us how to build a photopopper, using a solar engine.

I especially like that picture of the roller-skating bot. Unfortunately there's no tutorial how to build that one.

BEAM approach

BEAM is a school of robotics, starting from simple reflexes, in a 'bottoms-up' approach. The majority of BEAM robots are non-computerized (although simple CPUs can be used to drive them, in a 'horse and rider' sort of way). Unlike many traditional processor-based robots, BEAM robots are cheap, simple, and can be built by a hobbyist with basic skills in a matter of hours. Because of this, BEAM is an excellent way of getting started in robotics, and of learning about electronics.
